Roma are closing in on a statement signing with Girona forward Artem Dovbyk in talks to join the Serie A side.

Dovbyk has given the green light to a move to Italy after a proposed transfer to Atletico Madrid fell through, after a failure to find an agreement on personal terms. Roma are set to capitalise with Dovbyk having agreed terms on a five-year deal at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Ukraine international has a €40m (£33.7m) release clause in his contract at Girona, who he fired to Champions League qualification as La Liga’s top scorer in 2023-24.

Dovbyk scored 24 league goals to win the Pichichi award as the league’s leading scorer, becoming the first non-Barcelona or Real Madrid player to win the accolade since 2008-09.

His performances helped Girona to a top three finish and Champions League football, in only the club’s fourth-ever season as a top-flight side.

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Dovbyk has informed Girona that he only wants to join Roma, ending hopes of late interest from clubs in Spain and England. West Ham, Chelsea and Spurs have all been credited with interest in the 27-year-old.

His arrival will be a significant coup for Daniele De Rossi’s side, who finished sixth in Serie A last season and have seen leading scorer Romelu Lukaku to return to Chelsea after a loan spell with the club.

Dovbyk’s arrival could also see Tammy Abraham leave Rome. The England international struggled for status last season and has been linked with AC Milan and Premier League teams this summer.
