Robert Griffin III learns wife is in labor live during ESPN's College Football Playoff coverage

'Sorry guys, uh, I gotta go.'

The biggest moment of a wild Fiesta Bowl between TCU and Michigan wasn't on the field for Robert Griffin III.

During the third quarter of the College Football Playoff semifinal, Griffin received the news his wife, Estonian heptathlete Grete Griffin, was in labor live on the air while working as part of ESPN's "Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show" coverage.

The former NFL quarterback's co-hosts were initially confused why he was on the phone, up until he hung up and told them "Sorry guys, uh, I gotta go. My wife's going into labor." Griffin then embraced them and ran off the field.

He would later post the whole exchange on Twitter:

The Griffins announced Grete was pregnant with their third child, a girl, in July (Robert has a child from a previous marriage).

Despite the dramatic exit, Baby Girl Griffin is still currently ensconced inside her mom's belly. Grete posted an update on Sunday morning, revealing that it was a false alarm.

"First off let’s start by saying that even though baby girl tried to make a dramatic entrance last night into 2023, she decided it wasn’t time yet," she wrote.

Grete also sent a lot of love to her husband for literally exiting a live television broadcast to jump on a plane and join her.

Since his last NFL season in 2021, Griffin has worked as a college football and NFL analyst for ESPN. He joined Pat McAfee, A.J. Hawk, Taylor Lewan, A.Q. Shipley and more on ESPN2 as part of the network's College Football Playoff megacast.

The Griffins believe their baby girl won't arrive for another day. In a video Grete posted in her Instagram Story, she said she put Robert on a plane so he could go call another bowl game on New Year's Day. Hopefully he'll be able to complete the full broadcast this time, but everyone knows the baby is truly in charge of the schedule.
