Rob Edwards has spoken about what Jurgen Klopp said to him in his final season in charge at Liverpool.

Luton Town came to Anfield in their first season in the Premier League in February when Liverpool were well and truly in the title race.

It was a depleted Liverpool squad with youngsters Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns,  James McConnell, Kaide Gordon and Trey Nyoni all on the bench.

The Reds did come back from behind to win the game but Edwards was overwhelmed with how Klopp was post-match.

Edwards mentioned what happened after the game speaking on the High Performance Podcast.

“He put his arm around me when we walked in, they beat us 4-1. We were 1-0 up at half-time, playing really well but ultimately they were too good. Anfield was Anfield. Anfield was amazing that night, it was brilliant.

“And he came in after the game, put his arm around me and we were looking at the picture of him with the Champions League trophy and he was like: ‘How old are you?’ ’41.’ He said: ‘When I was your age I was as far away from that trophy as you are now,” said the former Watford manager.

The German didn’t stop there as he was clearly impressed with Edwards and gave him his time to speak about how he could go on to achieve big things as a manager.

Edwards continued: “But then he started talking about how this can be your time now and I love what you’re doing and how you’re working with the team and stuff. And I was like, wow!

“It was really, really nice to be able to sit down and have this time with him because I know they’re incredibly busy and there’s a lot of demands on them as well. So, for him to give that time means a lot to me.”

Luton Town did get relegated in the end but Klopp did also go through that with Mainz in the early stages of his career so Edwards will take some comfort in that.
