Richard Wigglesworth promoted as England confirm coaching team for autumn tests
Richard Wigglesworth has been promoted to the role of senior assistant coach with England.
The former scrum-half had initially joined Steve Borthwick’s backroom staff last year as an assistant and was tasked with overseeing England’s attack.
Wigglesworth, however, has now been handed greater responsibility ahead of next month’s Autumn Nations Series and landed the role of senior assistant coach.
The RFU say he will help develop England’s overall game plan and attacking strategy, while also providing support to Borthwick in day-to-day leadership and managing the coaching group.
“Richard’s deep knowledge of the game and his excellent tactical understanding means he has become a key figure in our coaching team,” said Borthwick.
“He shares our emotional commitment to English rugby, and I am certain he will play a crucial role in driving the standards of this England team. I am delighted he has agreed to take on this new challenge.”
Wigglesworth has become a key part of Borthwick’s coaching team and, following the departures of defence coach Felix Jones and strength and conditioning coach Aled Walters, the RFU will be delighted he is staying.
“Coaching is my passion, and I’m eager to do whatever I can to help this talented group of players win games of rugby, consistently,” said Wigglesworth.
“This is an exciting time for England Rugby. Steve has created a coaching environment based on collaboration and hard work, and we are constantly evolving and growing and striving for success.”
England have now confirmed their coaching team for next month’s Autumn Nations Series, which will see them take on New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Japan at Twickenham.
Joe El-Abd is one of four assistants and will focus on the defence. Tom Harrison is in charge of the scrum, Kevin Sinfield will oversee kicking and skills, and Andrew Strawbridge will work as an assistant and coaching advisor.
Borthwick said: “We have an outstanding group of coaches, who each bring unique expertise and experience to their roles.
“Together, we’re committed to helping the team reach new heights as we prepare for the upcoming Autumn Nations Series.”
