Return to Revis Island: Chiefs sign veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis

The Kansas City Chiefs, who are trying to right the ship after losing four of their last five games, have signed cornerback Darrelle Revis.

The team made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that Kansas City has been trying to sign Revis for much of the season, but the 32-year old would not take the deal until now.

It’s unclear at this point why Revis opted to wait until Week 12 to return to the field.

General manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid expressed their happiness at signing Revis in statements on the team website.

“Darrelle is a proven player in this league and we are excited to add him to our secondary,” Veach said. “He’s had a Hall of Fame career and his leadership and playing experience will be valuable to our defense.”

“We’re excited to add Darrelle to the roster,” Reid said. “He has experience and familiarity with [defensive coordinator] Bob Sutton’s defense, he’s a team guy and we feel like a player of his caliber can help our football team.”

Sutton was the Jets’ defensive coordinator for Revis’ first two seasons with the team.

Revis was released by the New York Jets on March 9, just two years into a five-year, $70 million deal he’d signed to return to the club in 2015. New York drafted Revis 14th overall in 2007, and he spent the first six years of his career with the Jets, before being traded to Tampa Bay in 2013.

He spent just a year with the Buccaneers, signing with the New England Patriots in 2014. Revis won a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots that season, then returned to the Jets after his release.

Revis has played and started 140 games in his career; he is a seven-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro.
