Retirement was on the cards if Manchester United did not offer contract extension: Jonny Evans

Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Manchester United announced that Jonny Evans had signed a one-year deal at the club last summer after eight years away from the club.

Erik ten Hag was impressed with his performances in training and opted to hand him a one-year deal, but the idea was never to be too reliant on the Northern Ireland international.

However, a severe injury crisis forced the Dutchman to call upon the 36-year-old 30 times in all competitions and he impressed under trying circumstances.

Ten Hag was delighted with his performances and his ability to make himself available for the team. He wanted the club to keep a hold of the veteran and the club did just that, albeit after a lengthy delay.

Evans re-signs

“I am delighted to have extended my contract at Manchester United for another season. To play for this great club and feel the support from our incredible fans is always a privilege.

“Returning to the club last season was an honour; representing the team on the pitch alongside fantastic team-mates under an excellent manager.

“Winning the FA Cup together was an unforgettable experience; I know we can challenge for more trophies in the season ahead,” he told the club website after signing the extension to keep him at United till 2025.

The three-time Premier League winner revealed the reasons behind the delay and explained that he had no interest in moving to another club after returning to his boyhood outfit after so many years away.

‘Was contemplating retirement’

“The fine details meant it took a bit longer than expected but I knew I wasn’t going anywhere else,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Evans, who completed a full set of domestic honours with the club after lifting the FA Cup last season, admitted he was open to retiring if the Old Trafford side did not offer him a new deal.

“It was either stay here or probably retire. I was glad another season came available and the club wanted me to stay. I had a great time last season and I want to continue that.”

He has played in all three friendlies thus far and with Leny Yoro’s injury, he could potentially see more minutes if the club does not bring in further reinforcement.
