Reports: Carolina Hurricanes Place Brendan Lemieux On Waivers To Terminate Contract
The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Brendan Lemieux on unconditional NHL waivers for the purpose of contract termination. The transaction is a mutual agreement between the club and the player.
In March, Lemieux signed a one-way, one-year deal with the Carolina Hurricanes, earning a $775,000 cap hit.
“Brendan asked to be released from his contract so he could pursue a new opportunity," Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky said. "We wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his career.”
Lemieux is yet to play an NHL game this season. Instead, he's played 12 games in the AHL with Carolina's affiliate team, the Chicago Wolves. He potted two goals and racked up 30 penalty minutes during this time.
This was the first time the 28-year-old played in the AHL since the 2017-18 campaign, when he played 51 games for the Jets affiliate, the Manitoba Moose.
Lemieux did play 32 games for the Hurricanes last season. He scored three goals and five points in the process.
As a result of the contract termination, Lemieux will become a UFA.
Lemieux was the 31st overall pick in the 2014 NHL draft by the Buffalo Sabres. However, he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets, where his NHL career began.
Lemieux played for three other teams before landing a spot in Carolina. He featured in three seasons for the New York Rangers and the Los Angeles Kings. The Denver native also played 18 games for the Philadelphia Flyers before his tenure with the Hurricanes.
Lemieux played 307 games in the NHL, putting up 74 points and 548 penalty minutes.
