Report: Why Liverpool’s New Signing Stayed at Valencia This Season
Giorgi Mamardashvili’s Decision to Delay Liverpool Move: An Insight
Liverpool fans eagerly anticipating Giorgi Mamardashvili’s arrival will need to wait a little longer, as the Georgian goalkeeper remains on loan at Valencia this season. Signed for a reported £30 million last summer, the 24-year-old impressed at the 2024 European Championship and quickly caught Liverpool’s eye. However, part of the deal ensured he would spend the current campaign at Valencia.
Staying at Valencia Amid Relegation Struggles
Despite his undeniable talent, Mamardashvili’s presence hasn’t been enough to lift Valencia out of their dire situation. With 17 appearances and four clean sheets to his name, the Georgian shot-stopper has shown flashes of brilliance. Yet, Valencia finds itself languishing in the relegation zone, occupying the second-to-last spot on the La Liga table.
While the challenge of saving his team from relegation looms large, Mamardashvili’s future lies elsewhere. Regardless of Valencia’s fate, the Georgian will don Liverpool’s colours next season, potentially joining the reigning Premier League champions.
Why Mamardashvili Stayed
In a candid moment after a recent Copa del Rey clash, Mamardashvili revealed his reasoning to Barcelona’s Ferran Torres. When asked why he didn’t leave Valencia for Liverpool immediately, the goalkeeper’s one-word response was telling: “Alisson.” As reported by Radio Taronja.

Liverpool’s first-choice keeper, Alisson Becker, remains one of the best in the world. Since joining Liverpool in 2018, the Brazilian has been a crucial part of their success. With Caoimhin Kelleher serving as a reliable deputy, there was little urgency for Mamardashvili to make the immediate switch.
However, with Kelleher reportedly keen to move on next summer in search of more game time, Mamardashvili is set to take up the role of Liverpool’s second-choice goalkeeper.
Our View – Anfield Index Analysis
Mamardashvili’s decision to stay at Valencia this season is both understandable and strategic. While his talents are undeniable, walking into a squad where Alisson reigns supreme as first-choice was never going to be easy.
The Georgian has made a mature decision to continue playing regularly at Valencia, even amidst a relegation battle. For Liverpool supporters, this loan spell serves as an extended audition. The pressure of keeping his team afloat in La Liga’s tough environment could prepare Mamardashvili for the demands of English football.
That said, some fans might question the long-term succession planning for Alisson. Mamardashvili’s eventual arrival raises intriguing questions: will he be content with a back-up role, or could his development signal a future transition at Anfield?
The timing of his arrival could also coincide with key squad changes. With Caoimhin Kelleher likely departing, Mamardashvili offers continuity in Liverpool’s goalkeeping department. While Alisson’s current form shows no signs of decline, having a young, hungry talent like Mamardashvili waiting in the wings ensures Liverpool’s future between the sticks is in safe hands.
