Report: UFC looking to dissolve flyweight division and fighters are already getting released

It looks like UFC will make some drastic changes to its fighting roster over the next few weeks. The company reportedly wants to dissolve the men’s flyweight division, and some fighters have already been released.

Rumors emerged that the division could be completely dissolved by the end of 2018. Those rumors appeared to have some truth to them after a number of flyweight fighters revealed they had been cut by UFC.

Jose Torres was the first fighter to announce he was gone.

Jarred Brooks and Justin Scoggins also revealed they are now free agents.

Not all fighters have been released, according to ESPN Ariel Helwani. That’s due to the way UFC contracts are structured.

UFC introduced the flyweight division in 2011. The division is comprised of fighters who weight 125 pounds or less.

The writing may have been on the wall for the division for a while now. In 2017, Demetrious Johnson said Dana White threatened to get rid of the flyweight division if Johnson didn’t take a fight against T.J. Dillashaw. Flyweight fights started disappearing from UFC main cards in 2018.

There are still a couple flyweight bouts scheduled for 2018. It’s unclear whether those fights will go on as planned following Wednesday’s purge.
