Report: Texans like Khalil Mack over Jadeveon Clowney

Well, this is certainly interesting.

As buzz continues to grow in regards to the Texans taking South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the No. 1 overall pick, a report from Peter King at TheMMQB.com indicates otherwise. King wrote that a friend of Texans general manager Rick Smith told him that the franchise prefers Buffalo outside linebacker Khalil Mack over Clowney, which would be quite the surprise from those that study the draft year in and year out.

There's no denying Mack's ability as a defender. He had 10.5 sacks with the Bulls this past season and single-handedly kept his team in the season-opener against Ohio State through three quarters.

But you'd be hard-pressed to find many folks that would undoubtedly go with Mack over Clowney.

Then again, the Texans will run a 3-4 defense and Clowney does seem better suited to be a 4-3 defensive end. There could be a bit of a learning curve for Clowney to become a 3-4 outside linebacker.

But there's also the possibility the Texans decide to take a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick. If that's the case, King's story indicates that the Texans, with about three weeks left before the draft, have yet to make up their mind as to which one they would prefer.

Given the depth this draft has, the No. 1 pick could go in plenty of different directions. It's been a while since this many options were on the table.
