Zetterlund was acquired from the New Jersey Devils in the trade that sent Timo Meier to the Eastern Conference. San Jose also received defenseman Shakir Mukhamadulin in the trade. After not scoring for the Sharks after the trade during the 22-23 season, the 25-year-old has done nothing but score big goals.

In 138 games for the Sharks, Zetterlund has 35 goals and assists. He led the team in goals during the 23-24 season with 24 and is on pace to beat last season's career-high this season. He currently has 11 goals in 34 games.
Zetterlund and fellow Swedish forward William Eklund were heavily considered for the February 2025 Four Nations Face-Off tournament. Although neither player made Team Sweden, there is still a chance they can join the roster if a player that was already named picks up an injury during the NHL season.
The winger's current cap hit is $1.45 million. After this season, he will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. With this report in mind, Zetterlund signing an extension with the San Jose Sharks would mean they view him as a key piece in general manager Mike Grier's rebuild plan.
