Report – Reason behind Alphonso Davies snubbing Real Madrid despite prior agreement
It is no secret that Real Madrid were very interested in signing Alphonso Davies in the summer this year once his contract at Bayern Munich would expire at the end of the season.
A move had been in the works since last year, with a verbal agreement understood to have been in place with the left-back since February 2024.
However, the Canadian international has now opted to renew his contract with Bayern Munich and continue his journey at the Allianz Arena, leaving Real Madrid high and dry.
Reason behind the U-turn
Now, MARCA has come out with an extensive report outlining why Davies decided to reject Real Madrid despite having a prior agreement.
The reason the operation for the Canadian full-back from Bayern Munich did not materialise was not due to developments in January 2025, but rather what did not happen seven months ago.
True to their strategy of monitoring top-level players entering the final two years of their contracts, Real Madrid reached a verbal agreement with Davies in February of last year, in which the player agreed not to renew his contract with Bayern.
When the summer transfer window arrived, the Bavarians, having realised that Davies’ agent was reluctant to renew, assumed he had an agreement with another club and offered to sell him for around €55-60 million.
Meanwhile, Carlo Ancelotti had long been advocating for the renewal of Ferland Mendy, whom he considers “the best left-back in the world defensively.” The manager was open to the arrival of Davies, but not at the cost of losing the Frenchman.
After much consideration, Madrid decided to back Mendy and asked Davies, who had experienced a dip in form during those months, to wait another year, when he would become a free agent and could be signed then.
Davies felt slighted and, disappointed by what he saw as being left in the lurch by Los Blancos, he began to take Bayern’s renewal offers more seriously.
The Canadian international never completely closed the door on Real Madrid, he maintained contact with them, but the situation had changed, and the club were well aware of this shift.
That, coupled with Bayern Munich’s improved offer for renewal, ha convinced the 24-year-old to continue with the Bundesliga giants.
