From Thursday’s Star-Telegram report:

As the Dallas Cowboys coaching search hits a new day on Thursday, Jan. 23, more rumors have begun to fly out of The Star about where Jerry Jones could be headed in search of the franchise’s 10th head coach.

The Star-Telegram has confirmed that Jones has contacted former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll regarding the opening. The conversation has been described as informal, although the interest is legitimate enough to be reported, according to a source.

As of Thursday afternoon, there were no plans for a formal interview.

It should be noted that Carroll worked with Brian Schottenheimer from 2018 to 2020. Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator in Dallas from 2023 to 2024, interviewed for the Cowboys head coach opening over the span of two days earlier this week and is the ideal choice for various personnel in the building. Ultimately, the decision lies in the hands of Jerry Jones.

The Las Vegas Raiders and Pete Carroll also reportedly have had discussions regarding their opening, according to James Palmer of Underdog Fantasy.

Despite being 73, Carroll has let it be known that he is still open to coaching in the NFL and will engage with any opportunities put in front of him.

With 18 seasons of NFL head coaching experience, a Super Bowl in 2013 with Seattle and a college football national championship in 2004 with USC, the winning pedigree could entice the front office to bring him in. In his final 12 seasons with the Seahawks, Carroll had just one losing season.

His experience with Schottenheimer could bode well if the Cowboys look toward keeping consistency on the offensive side of the ball. Additionally, Pete Carroll would bring a similar defensive mindset that Dan Quinn had in his three years as defensive coordinator in Dallas from 2021-2023 derived from the pair’s time together in the 2010s in Seattle.
