Report: Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk suing partner over 'failed' downtown arena bid

On and off the ice, things just aren’t going well for Eugene Melnyk and the Ottawa Senators.
On and off the ice, things just aren’t going well for Eugene Melnyk and the Ottawa Senators.

On Thursday, a dust up between RendezVous LeBreton Group partners Eugene Melnyk and John Ruddy went public.

One day later, we’ve got a lawsuit on our hands.

Shaamini Yogaretnam of the Ottawa Citizen is reporting that Melynk is suing the Trinity Development Group for $700 million on account of the failure of their joint venture to develop the LeBreton Flats, a project that would have included a new, downtown home for the Ottawa Senators.

The lawsuit appears to centre around an allegation of conflict of interest on Ruddy’s part. It states that he started developing a 900 Albert St. property in “direct competition” with LeBreton.

“Ruddy and Trinity misused confidential inside information about the LeBreton Project and abused the trust (Capital Sports Management) had placed in them,” it says.

It will take a while for this knot to untie itself, but for anyone who has followed the Senators during the Melnyk era, this kind of high drama has become more the rule than the exception.
