Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Window: Is Andriy Lunin The Right Move?

Liverpool have reportedly made an approach to sign an impressive Real Madrid star who will be allowed to move on from the LaLiga giants this summer. The Reds have been incredibly quiet in the summer transfer window so far, with outgoings dominating the new Arne Slot era at Anfield to date.

Liverpool’s Quiet Transfer Window

Under the new management of Arne Slot, Liverpool’s summer transfer activity has been minimal, focusing more on player departures than new signings. Notable exits include Joel Matip, Thiago, Adrian and Calvin Ramsay. Despite these outgoings, Slot has yet to make his first addition to the squad since taking over from the legendary Jurgen Klopp.

Defensive Targets on Liverpool’s Radar

The rumour mill is starting to heat up, with defensive stalwarts Marc Guehi and Goncalo Inacio emerging as major targets for Liverpool. Guehi shone for England during Euro 2024, leading them to the final, while Inacio has established himself at Sporting since breaking into the team in 2020. These pursuits indicate Liverpool’s focus on bolstering their defence, which aligns with their reported interest in Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

Andriy Lunin: A Bargain at £25m?

Praised as a ‘world-class’ shot-stopper, Lunin was Madrid’s starting goalkeeper for much of last season. However, with Thibaut Courtois returning from injury, Lunin is likely to be relegated to the bench for the upcoming campaign. At just £25m, Lunin represents a potential bargain for clubs seeking a new No.1 or a top-class backup. According to a report from TeamTalk, this has attracted significant transfer interest in the talented 25-year-old.

The Surprising Lunin-Liverpool Links

Despite the interest, Liverpool’s pursuit of Lunin is somewhat surprising. Alisson remains the clear first choice, and Caoimhin Kelleher is his current deputy. However, there has been interest from the Saudi Pro League in Alisson, while Kelleher is expected to move on in search of regular first-team action.

Due to his exploits with the LaLiga and Champions League winners, Lunin is sure to expect that he will get a starting spot with another top European side. However, there is every chance he would come in as Alisson’s No.2 if he does make the switch to Merseyside. The reports from Spain do appear to be accurate, however, which paints a potential picture of what could still happen with Alisson despite his decision to resist Saudi offers so far.

What Does This Mean for Liverpool?

If Lunin does sign though, it would give Slot the best goalkeeper pairing in the Premier League bar none and also allow the Dutchman to utilise an incredible rotation. This potential acquisition would enhance Liverpool’s squad depth and provide a reliable option should Alisson depart or require rest. However, whether Lunin is willing to play second fiddle to Alisson remains to be seen.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

The pursuit of Andriy Lunin raises several questions. While Lunin’s talent is undeniable, his desire to secure a starting role at a top European club seems at odds with Liverpool’s current setup. Alisson’s position as the undisputed No.1 is unlikely to change, making it difficult to envision Lunin accepting a backup role.

Furthermore, the speculation surrounding Alisson’s potential move to the Saudi Pro League, although plausible, appears premature. Alisson has shown no inclination to leave Liverpool, and his commitment to the club has been steadfast. As for Kelleher, his departure seems imminent, but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool would prioritise a high-profile signing like Lunin over developing another promising talent from within.

In summary, while Lunin would undoubtedly strengthen Liverpool’s goalkeeping options, the practicalities of such a move need careful consideration. Liverpool fans may remain sceptical until more concrete developments unfold, particularly regarding Alisson’s future and Kelleher’s next steps.
