Report: Former Notre Dame DC Brian VanGorder helping out at Georgia

Ex-Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder (L) was fired in September.

Was former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder a key to Georgia’s win over Auburn two weeks ago?

According to Dawg Nation, VanGorder is helping out Georgia in a defensive analyst role and was involved in the team’s gameplanning before the 13-7 win over the Tigers. The win clinched the SEC West for Alabama as Auburn’s offense was flat-out inept in the second half.

The Tigers didn’t get a first down in the final 30 minutes and Alabama transfer Maurice Smith returned a Sean White pass for a touchdown, Georgia’s only TD of the game.

Georgia has not confirmed VanGorder’s presence, but the Dawg Nation report notes VanGorder “has been seen at UGA’s football facility in coaching gear and on the Bulldogs’ practice field and he sat on the front row for Georgia’s basketball game against Furman this past Thursday.” So it doesn’t seem like it’s too much of a secret despite Kirby Smart’s abhorrence of being transparent for the media covering the team.

VanGorder was fired from Notre Dame in September after the Fighting Irish lost games to Texas, Michigan State and Duke and gave up an average of over 40 points in those three games.

The Irish’s defense hasn’t exactly made dramatic steps in his absence. The unit couldn’t get off the field in a loss vs. Navy. The Notre Dame offense had just six possessions vs. the Midshipmen. At 4-7, Notre Dame can only get to a bowl via APR if it beats USC on Saturday.
