Report: Dustin Poirier injury leads to canceled UFC 230 co-headliner at MSG vs. Nate Diaz

The scheduled UFC 230 lightweight fight between Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz is off because of an undisclosed injury to Poirier, ESPN reports.

UFC president Dana White told the L.A. Times that UFC would not seek another opponent for Diaz.

Big blow for UFC event at marquee venue

The news is a blow for UFC as it stages an event under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

The UFC is relatively new to MSG after New York regulated MMA and hosted its first event in 2016 at UFC 205. Diaz was previously the biggest draw on a light card at the marquee venue, setting UFC up for a potentially embarrassing situation.

New headliner blunts impact

Softening the blow is Tuesday’s earlier news that Daniel Cormier will defend his heavyweight title against Derrick Lewis to top the fight card.

But the loss is a blow, nonetheless. Diaz is a known commodity and a big draw for UFC. He hasn’t fought since a 2016 loss to Conor McGregor at UFC 202, and fans are hungry to see him.
