Here’s the report card from KU Jayhawks’ Week 4 loss to West Virginia Mountaineers

Kansas football may have hit a new low Saturday.

The Jayhawks led by double-digits midway through the fourth quarter but went on to lose 32-28 to the West Virginia Mountaineers at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.

It was KU’s third straight loss.

“A lot of things to correct, but this team is still close,” KU coach Lance Leipold told reporters during his postgame news conference. “I know it stinks for everybody associated with our program, our fans, everybody. ...

“I know this group’s got a lot of fight in them.”

Here are our grades for all three KU units against West Virginia, plus a Kansas player of the game:

Kansas offense: C

Another week, another disappointing showing for the Jayhawks’ offense.

Against one of the worst secondaries in the nation, KU quarterback Jalon Daniels was nothing special at West Virginia.

He was 15-of-25 for 184 yards with one passing touchdown and one interception. He ran it seven times, gaining 11 yards.

The Jayhawks’ offensive line didn’t do Daniels any favors in pass protection. He was constantly under duress, looked skittish and frequently had to hurry in hopes of avoiding Mountaineers defenders.

The lone bright spot was KU’s rushing attack. Running back Devin Neal rolled up 110 rushing yards on 27 carries and Daniel Hishaw picked up 72 on nine carries.

Kansas defense: C-

Saturday’s defensive effort left a lot to be desired.

KU’s secondary was abysmal. The Jayhawks allowed 295 passing yards to West Virginia — the most they’ve surrendered in a game this season.

KU also struggled to stop WVU’s Garrett Greene on the ground: He had 87 rushing yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry.

Kansas cornerbacks Mello Dotson and Cobee Bryant each grabbed an interception, but that was the only positive for KU’s secondary.

The Jayhawks’ D-line managed to record three sacks, but for the third straight week the defense pretty much collapsed in the fourth quarter.

Kansas special teams: B

KU’s special teams played well enough Saturday in Morgantown.

Kicker Tabor Allen went 4-for-4 on PATS. Return man Trevor Wilson averaged 16 yards per attempt, with a long of 18.

KU punter Damon Greaves averaged 44.2 yards per punt, with a long of 56.

Player of the game: Daniel Hishaw

Hishaw was underutilized in this matchup.

He converted several key third downs for the Jayhawks and averaged eight yards per carry.

But nine carries all game? He was playing well and simply didn’t see the football enough Saturday.
