Report: Canucks Defensive Prospect Set To Make NHL Debut Against Washington

Vancouver Canucks' Sportsnet play-by-play broadcaster John Shorthouse is bound to have struggles tonight, as it looks like Elias Pettersson (D) is set to play in his first career NHL game against the Washington Capitals. The 20-year-old was called up to Vancouver on Wednesday night alongside fellow Abbotsford Canucks forward Linus Karlsson.

Pettersson has had a solid debut season with Abbotsford so far, putting up a goal and 12 assists in 36 games played. As well, he has registered 53 total shots on net this season. Most recently, he was named to the AHL All-Star Classic, set to take place in Palm Desert, California.

Picked 80th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft, the same year as fellow Swedish Canucks prospect Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Pettersson spent three seasons with Örebro HK of the SHL before being loaned to Västerås IK in the 2023-24 season. From there, he joined Abbotsford for eight regular season games and one playoff game. He played for Team Sweden in the 2023 and 2024 World Juniors, putting up five assists in fourteen games played throughout both tournaments.

Pettersson will be playing at the same time as his name twin, 2017 fifth-overall draft pick and Calder Memorial Trophy winner, Elias Pettersson. The defenceman will be the 35th Swede to play a game for the franchise, and the most recent since Lekkerimäki's NHL debut in November.
