Report: Bears not retaining these coaches from former coaching staff
The Chicago Bears introduced Ben Johnson as their new head coach on Wednesday, and the focus has now shifted to Johnson building his coaching staff.
Johnson stressed the importance of those hires, notably the offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and offensive line coach, and there are many who wondered if he could perhaps pertain some members of this former coaching staff.
According to The Athletic's Adam Jahns, the Bears will not retain a handful of coaches: interim head coach Thomas Brown, defensive coordinator Eric Washington, interim offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Chris Beatty, offensive line coach Chris Morgan and quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph.
This doesn't come as a surprise considering Johnson will look to build his own coaching staff. He preached the importance of surrounding himself with experienced coaches that he can lean on, and he's going to use his own experience to help mold a staff he can trust.
"That's going to be a critical part of our success," Johnson said of his coaching staff. "I really believe that we're going to be able to find some great candidates out there that, that want to come to Chicago for a number of reasons. They will be able to help guide and show me the way. The good news is this, I'm not coming necessarily from a program that has solely won for the last 10 years. What I've seen in my time in the NFL, seven years with Miami, six years in Detroit, is as much not good as I've seen good. There are a number of things that I've experienced and I've seen that should help throw the red flag up and help me avoid those potential pitfalls.”
There have been plenty of reports and rumors circulating since Johnson was hired, including former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen being a top candidate for defensive coordinator and former Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi being a target for special teams coordinator.
