Report: Barcelona see 18-year-old talent as Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s replacement

It is no secret that Diego Kochen is one of Barça Atletic’s most promising jewels, and if a report from Diario AS is to be believed, the 18-year-old is being considered as the perfect successor to the seasoned Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The veteran German is currently on vacation, but new manager Hansi Flick has not stopped his work. At present, Flick is currently working with three goalkeepers: Inaki Pena, Ander Astralaga, and Diego Kochen.

Pena, who is not looking to move, is expected to stay as Ter Stegen’s backup. Astralaga faces a critical decision about his future and the spotlight is on Kochen, who is expected to secure the starting goalkeeper position for Barça Atletic next season.

Interestingly, the 18-year-old trained frequently with the first team last season under the watchful eyes of coach Xavi and Ter Stegen himself, which served as a significant learning experience.

Kochen admires Ter Stegen

Kochen’s admiration for Ter Stegen is well-documented. In an interview, he expressed his awe at sharing the same space with his idol, describing Ter Stegen as a true gentleman.

Kochen even made his debut call-up for the first team during a match against Cadiz. His commitment to the club was solidified in February 2024 when he renewed his contract until June 2028.

It is said that the club’s sporting management has high hopes for Kochen. They believe he possesses the attributes necessary to become an exceptional goalkeeper.

Kochen is liked by the management

Despite being only in his second year as a youth player, Kochen was the third-choice goalkeeper for the first team and made his debut with Barça Atlètic against Unionistas de Salamanca.

The management praises his ability to play out from the back and his excellent ball-striking skills. They also highlight his remarkable reflexes and imposing presence due to his size.

Moreover, Kochen has an innate understanding of the game, which aligns perfectly with Barcelona’s style of play. The club officials often remark that he is “100% Barça-like” in his approach and intelligence on the field.

Despite his young age, the 18-year-old has shown maturity and a keen ability to learn from his experiences. He knows that if he continues on his current trajectory, he is well on his way to becoming Ter Stegen’s heir.
