Renee Montgomery launches NFT collection based on the biggest moments of her career

Atlanta Dream co-owner, and two-time WNBA champion Renee Montgomery is the latest athlete to go all-in on NFTs. Montgomery announced Friday she is launching an NFT collection focusing on some of the biggest moments of her career.

The collection is called "My Starting Five." Montgomery told Yahoo Sports she is using the collection to tell the story of her career.

"These are going to be very important things that happened in my career," Montgomery said. "When I opted out, that was a big moment in my career, you know. And so there's going to be something there for that. So people can understand me, I'm going to tell it through my NFTs."

Montgomery should have a fair amount to pull from. She won two WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx. Montgomery also won a national championship with the UConn Huskies in 2009. During her time at UConn, Montgomery also led the USA U-20 National Team to a gold medal.

Montgomery mentioned she'll make an NFT based on her decision to opt out of the 2020 WNBA season. She could also make an NFT of her becoming a co-owner of the Dream.

With the collection, Montgomery wants to prove she can hit the same price point as male athletes who have embraced NFTs.

"A lot of times with anything, people pay a premium for men's sports, but they don't necessarily pay a premium for things on the women's side," Montgomery said. "And so I'm trying to create high-quality NFTs to see if we can reach that same premium price point that the men are getting. So that's my goal to just put out there a good product, and, hopefully, people gravitate towards it."

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski is among the athletes who have already released NFT collections. Gronkowski's first NFT sold for $1.2 million, so there's a lot of money to be made from the endeavor.

What is an NFT and how can you buy one?

NFT stands for non-fungible token, which isn't the most descriptive term. Montgomery describes NFTs as "the new age trading card." It's essentially a file featuring a digital moment. In this instance, the file would contain a significant moment from Montgomery's career.

Montgomery's NFTs will be sold on Opensea. Similar to sports memorabilia, Montgomery's NFTs will go up for auction and be sold to the highest bidder. There will be a limited supply available.

"Certain NFTs are one of one," Montgomery said. "Certain NFTs are five of five."

Given the rising popularity of NFTs, Montgomery is unlikely to be the last athlete to embrace the concept. Depending on how well Montgomery's "My Starting Five" collection sells, there could be more opportunities for her to sell NFTs of other significant moments in her career.

She's not lacking for options there.
