Referee Rosario Abisso presided over a comedy of errors in Inter Milan’s Serie A win over Parma yesterday evening.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, criticize the official for the volume of questionable or outright incorrect decisions.

Abisso was closer to the centre of the action that most would have preferred yesterday.

In some cases, that was very literal. The referee got in the way of play on four occasions, failing to get out of the way of the ball and having to restart play with a drop ball.

These disruptions were hardly welcome from either set of players.

Then, there were a few dodgy decisions.

Abisso twice awarded Inter a penalty for an apparent foul on captain Lautaro Martinez.

But in the first instance, the contact happened outside the penalty area. And in the second, there was little if any contact in the “foul.”

Then, there was the matter of a penalty that Abisso did not award to Inter.

The referee did not see the handball by Parma captain Enrico Del Prato in the box as worthy of a foul.

But in the view of the Corriere, that handball should have been a spot kick for Inter.

Meanwhile, there was also a very soft yellow card to Inter wingback Federico Dimarco for what looked like a fairly standard foul to bring down Parma midfielder Simon Sohm.

And lastly, there was the farce that was the VAR check on Nicolo Barella’s goal for Inter.

It was fairly clear upon seeing the first replay of the incident that Barella had kept himself well onside.

However, for whatever reason, it took the VAR team two full minutes to award the goal.
