Red Wings' Patrick Kane Has A U.S. Record On The Radar After Reaching 1,300 NHL Points

Detroit Red Wings right winger Patrick Kane reached the 1,300-point mark with a goal and an assist on Sunday against the Washington Capitals. He became the third American-born player in NHL history to score that many points.

Kane's historical night began early in the first period on the power play. He received the puck in the right faceoff circle before sniping a shot past Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren. His goal gave the Wings a 2-0 lead.

Later in the game, he notched his 1,300th point on a primary assist to Alex DeBrincat, who has been Kane's teammate for seven seasons dating back to their time with the Chicago Blackhawks.

They combined to make it 3-1 Red Wings, and Detroit went on to win the game 4-2, ending a four-game losing streak. This win was Todd McLellan's first since becoming the new coach of the Red Wings on Thursday.

Kane ranks fourth in points among active NHL skaters, trailing only Sidney Crosby (1,636), Alex Ovechkin (1,577) and Evgeni Malkin (1,327).

Kane also has a massive lead on active American NHL players. Capitals defenseman John Carlson has the second-most points, with 697.

While 1,300 points is a huge milestone for the 36-year-old, Kane is within reach of a bigger accomplishment. He is fewer than 100 points away from the two players ahead of him on the all-time American list.

Mike Modano, who scored 1,374 points, is in second place. Brett Hull, who has 1,391, is the leader.

In Kane's heyday, becoming the all-time leader would have taken a season, as he has two 100-point seasons. While he may not score at the same rate at this stage of his career, Kane still puts up respectable numbers. Last season with Detroit, he scored 47 points in 50 games.

This season, he's scored six goals and 10 assists for 16 points in 31 games. With those totals, Kane is on pace to score around 40 points this campaign.

Considering his scoring pace, it may take Kane a couple of more seasons before he can become the all-time leader in points among American-born skaters.
