Red Wings-Maple Leafs Lineup Update & Where to Watch

Tonight at ScotiaBank Arena in Toronto, the Maple Leafs will do battle with the Detroit Red Wings, and on both sides of the ledger, there are some significant injury concerns that will inform the evening's action.

To start with the home team, the Maple Leafs will be without captain and talismanic sniper Auston Matthews.  Matthews suffered an upper body injury last weekend and missed Toronto's Tuesday night game against the Bruins.  Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told reporters that Matthews is trending in the right direction to play tomorrow night, but for this evening, Detroit won't have to wrangle Toronto's superstar.

Meanwhile, for the visitors, there are also some new lineup wrinkles to report.  This morning, the Red Wings raised eyebrows with the announcement that they were calling up goaltender Ville Husso from Grand Rapids under emergency conditions.  Those conditions implied that either Cam Talbot or Alex Lyon was dealing with an injury.

After this morning's skate, Detroit coach Derek Lalonde clarified that for reporters in Toronto, revealing that Alex Lyon is now officially "day-to-day" as he deals with a lower body injury.  That leaves Talbot to tend goal tonight against the Maple Leafs, and with the Red Wings dealing with a back-to-back, it also means that Husso will get his first start for Detroit since opening night (when he conceded four times on just 14 shots, a performance that led to his demotion to Grand Rapids).

Lalonde also revealed that the Red Wings will be tinkering with their defense this evening, and this time it will be Jeff Petry's turn as the odd-man out, leaving Detroit with a blue line of Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, Ben Chiarot, Erik Gustafsson, Albert Johansson and former Maple Leaf Justin Holl.  It's the first time we've seen the Red Wings hold out Petry this season, so it will be interesting to see how Lalonde re-casts his top four.  Edvinsson-Seider and Chiarot-Petry had become staples for Detroit in the season's early going, with a rotating cast on the third pair of Gustafsson, Johansson, Holl, and the since-traded Olli Maatta.  As such, it will be worth monitoring who fills in for Petry on the second pair.
