Red Wings Can Make History Tonight

You don't make history every day.

The Detroit Red Wings look to improve on their 20-18-4 record this year. Tonight, they play against the San Jose Sharks. This will be the first time Todd McLellan has coached against his old team since re-joining the Red Wings organization.

But that isn't all that is going on with tonight's game.

The Red Wings have a 7-1-0 record since McLellan took over behind the bench. The team has experienced a night and day difference in performance and pace.

To use McLellan's own words, they are "playing f****** hockey."

They are riding a seven-game win streak. If they win tonight, some history will be made. It will be the longest win streak the organization has had since the 2007-08 season. The Red Wings have never had a win streak last longer than nine games.

During the 2007-08 season (17 years ago), the Red Wings experienced an eight-game and nine-game win streak. At the halfway mark of that season, they set a record for the most first-half wins (30).

They capped off that season with a Stanley Cup, the organization's 11th Championship. Coincidentally, that was the last time the Red Wings had won the Stanley Cup.

It would be premature to plan a parade on behalf of the organization, but fans will take the wins as they come. A win tonight will go a long way toward showing the fan base that they mean business.

Steve Yzerman expected the team to contend for a Wild Card position. If things progress, they could be looking at more.

Including potentially making more history.
