Red Raiders coach on Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes: ‘The guy absolutely loves Texas Tech’

Wimbledon, Formula One race, Taylor Swift concerts, computer generated images of oversized new Adidas shoes hanging from Big Ben and Tower Bridge ... it’s been a travel whirlwind for Patrick Mahomes in recent weeks.

But he never seems too far away from the teams he loves — the Chiefs, who open training camp next week, and Texas Tech.

Before his European jaunt, Mahomes and his alma mater made news when Tech unveiled his “Gladiator” logo on the Red Raiders’ stadium turf, part of a partnership with Adidas.

Tech coach Joey McGuire wonders if there is a stronger relationship between a superstar and his university than Mahomes and the Red Raiders.

“I don’t think anybody could come up with a guy at the level he plays at — he’s the best quarterback in the world — and do what he does whenever it comes to the university,” McGuire said at Big 12 media days.

McGuire tells the story of last season, when the Chiefs’ bye week came during Texas Tech’s trip to Kansas.

“Probably a large majority of NFL players are taking a break on their bye week,” McGuire said. “He’s on the sideline watching us play the Jayhawks.

“The guy just absolutely loves Texas Tech. ... He’s one of the guys literally texts me and asks, ‘Coach, what do you need?’”

Also, Mahomes won’t have to tape over an Under Armour logo on his Texas Tech gear, like he did in 2019, now that the Raider Raiders have switched to Adidas.
