'We Really Need To Bring A Work Ethic Instead Of Trying To Just Fluke Our Way Through Games.': Seth Jarvis, Tyson Jost, Rod Brind'Amour On Loss To Washington

The Carolina Hurricanes lost 3-1 to the Washington Capitals Friday night at Capital One Arena.

While Seth Jarvis prevented the team from being shutout, there just wasn't enough finish all around for the Hurricanes, who definitely had enough chances to win.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Tyson Jost and Jarvis spoke with the media in DC. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the game:
I didn't like the first period. We were not very good and then gave up a late goal which we don't want to do obviously. Second period, the first 15 minutes, we were doing exactly what we needed, but their goalie made a couple of nice saves and then we gave up another one kind of late which just deflates the whole group. So now you're not getting three against these guys probably the way they defend. We gave a good effort, but I think we messed up because that first period was just not what we needed it to be.

On Washington's shot blocking: They did a nice job. Like I said, we generated enough, and their goalie made a couple of nice saves. Could have easily had a couple more, but I felt like we gave them a couple by just not digging in as much as we needed to. Coming from behind is hard. It's a lot easier, especially with the way they play and the way we play too. When you get leads, you're not giving up a ton. I just felt like, at the start, we just weren't sharp.

On the team's road play: I don't know. It does matter. I haven't seen any one thing that I can say, 'Oh that's the difference,' I think it's just kind of like tonight where we get kind of burned a couple of shifts where we just take little breathers and the other team capitalizes. We haven't been able to capitalize on our opportunities. Like we had a couple of really good ones tonight. You get those chances, you have to bury them. That's just the end of the day. Then the game's different.

On the late period goals against: Those are brutal. Start of games or periods and end of games and periods. That's what you eat going back into the locker room. That's not a good taste in your mouth. I guess at the end of the day, that was the game. Two goals in the last minutes. Can't happen.

Tyson Jost

On the game:
We were good at times but just not for the full 60. That one stings because you do it right for so long but then there's just a couple of little lapses and it kind of bites you. It was a good game, playoff-like game, but that one stings.

On Charlie Lindgren's save on him: It obviously sucks. I mean, he made a great save. I did everything I could and put it right where I wanted and he made a circus save. Tip your hat to him, I guess, but it's frustrating. It's nice that you're at least getting those chances and getting those looks. I felt like I had a lot of looks today. These guys stick with it and you can't get too down.

On giving up the late goals: Those sting. It's tough just because coming into the intermission you gain momentum and then that happens. We know we have to be better on that and clean that up and that's something we've talked about. It's tough but we'll learn from that for sure.

Seth Jarvis

On late period goals:
You can't give up goals in the last minute of periods. That sucks the life out of anything you've kind of built going into the intermission. I mean, on that second one, I've got to be harder to play against. It's just bearing down, winning battles, especially knowing the time and place in the game. We're still in it, it's 2-0, but we're making progress and just to do that is unacceptable. That's been the story of the last little while for our team and it's just about locking in, especially in those dying minutes.

On the recent road struggles: We try to carry over our game from how we play at home, but to say we're having success is probably a little bit of a stretch right now.

On the goaltending: [Pyotr Kochetkov] made huge save after huge save, but that's not what we want to do. That's not how we play. We don't want to rely on him, but knowing he's back there to make those saves definitely gives us a little bit of confidence.

On Washington's shot blocking: I mean, sticking with it is a little bit tough, especially when you see those shots getting blocked and the puck going the other way. I mean, that all just boils down to our mental toughness and having to stay with it. Knowing that they're going to block those shots and it's going to hurt them and maybe, who knows, maybe it's the last minute of the third period and they're hurting a little bit from blocking them and after 27 shots, maybe one sneaks through and that's the goal we need. But it's just sticking with it and really not drifting away from what we're trying to do.

On moving forward: Just learning from what we did tonight, taking away the good parts of our game and learning from the bad ones. Really, it just boils down to when we have success and you watch Jordo's line every night. It boils down to working hard and creating chances for yourself and that's just not what's happening throughout the lineup, myself included. We just need more from our top guys and we really just need to bring a work ethic instead of trying to just fluke our way through games.
