Last night was a special occasion for a certain Joan Martinez as he made his unofficial first-team debut for Real Madrid, featuring in a pre-season friendly against AC Milan.

An exceptional talent who is rated very highly within the club, the 16-year-old centre-back joined Los Blancos only last summer and is already knocking on the first-team doors.

While it is true that his opportunity in the senior setup was borne more out of necessity due to injuries, the youngster held his own in the time that he played against Milan, showcasing his vast potential.

Martinez ‘grateful’ after debut

Now, having made his senior debut for Real Madrid, Joan Martinez has taken to social media to express his happiness to have gotten a chance, while expressing gratitude to everyone who has helped him in his journey.

“Happy for my debut with the first team. I am grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey with me. From now on, work and more work,” the 16-year-old wrote, along with images from his debut against AC Milan.

Ancelotti, Vazquez impressed

Joan Martinez put in a fine display at the Soldier Field in Chicago last night, with a Sergio Ramos-esque tackle being a particular highlight of his time on the field.

The 16-year-old’s performance made a big impression on manager Carlo Ancelotti, who praised Martinez after the game, saying:

“It’s time for the younger players to enjoy themselves. Joan Martinez has potential, he’s young, but he has potential. He has everything a Madrid centre-back needs.”

Meanwhile, veteran Real Madrid full-back Lucas Vazquez also hailed Martinez’s display against AC Milan, as he said:

“I wasn’t here at 16, he (Joan Martinez) is an incredible boy. He played very well today, he is a defender with great potential and we will help him evolve.”

It will certainly be interesting to see whether Martinez gets more game-time in the coming matches, with Real Madrid set to face Barcelona up next.
