Amidst all the talks of Real Madrid and their pursuit of Alphonso Davies, the situation of Ferland Mendy has become a matter of intrigue.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has made no secret of his admiration for the French defender, often calling him the best defensive full-back in the world.

As such, it has been constantly reported that the Italian would prefer to retain the 29-year-old, irrespective of how the pursuit of Davies pans out.

But Mendy’s contract expires in 2025 and it has been reported that the Los Blancos’ board might not be in favour of a renewal and could sell him as both he and Davies cannot remain at the club.

Mendy’s renewal now a priority

Now, though, the situation seems to have flipped completely as MARCA reports that Real Madrid have made it a priority to tie Ferland Mendy down to a new contract.

A new contract proposal is already on the table and, although there is no agreement, there is harmony between the two parties and a desire to reach an agreement before the club season kicks off with the European Super Cup.

Ancelotti has always been clear: his desire is for the Frenchman to continue to be the first-choice left-back at Real Madrid.

In his opinion, Mendy is essential and provides balance to the team. The club have understood this and resumed negotiations to extend the agreement with the Frenchman this past spring.

In previous seasons, there was some rapprochement, but never an intensity in the negotiations to reach an agreement. But, now, there is both time and optimism in the attempt to finalise a new contract.

Fran Garcia the scapegoat?

With Real Madrid ready to renew Ferland Mendy and pursuing Alphonso Davies as well, it could possibly mean the end of the road for Fran Garcia.

The left-back returned to the club last year but lost prominence in the latter half of the season and could end up being sacrificed in the summer, especially with Bournemouth showing an interest.
