Real Madrid ‘surprised’ by calls for Ancelotti’s departure after Super Cup thrashing
Real Madrid’s sky-high standards leave virtually no margin for error for players and management alike. Often, however, it is the coach who faces the brunt of the situation.
The aftermath of Real Madrid’s defeat to Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup needs to say, brought out impulsive feelings and Carlo Ancelotti was the one to face the brunt of it.
In fact, it has not even taken 24 hours for news of his future being uncertain to appear in the headlines although the club insist that they retain faith in him.
Shock in Madrid
As relayed in a recent update by Mario Cortegana of The Athletic, the Real Madrid officials themselves were surprised by the doubts that arose around Ancelotti’s future after the defeat last night.
They believe that there is no team that can win consistently without slip-ups or can play well week in and week out. The occasional defeat, thus, is acceptable and cannot warrant demands for the manager’s resignation.
Concurrently, however, it is quite clear that the calls for the Italian coach’s departure were not purely limited to the defeat itself but the manner in which Real Madrid went down.
El Clasico is a game with high stakes and a lot of pride on the line and for Real Madrid to go down by a 5-2 scoreline did not help the manager’s cause.
Rubbing salt into the wounds was the fact that it was Real Madrid’s second defeat to Barcelona this season.
Despite the noise in the media, Ancelotti and Co. will look to regroup themselves at the earliest and get back to winning games, especially with a crucial clash in the Copa del Rey coming up.
There are indeed areas of concern that must be addressed, but the manager has improved the team’s confidence significantly so far this season and there is no reason to believe he cannot keep the positive trend going.
