The Ballon d’Or 2024 is going to be a significant one in the context of football.

For the first time in quite a while, neither Lionel Messi nor Cristiano Ronaldo are favourites to win the prestigious trophy, which marks a significant turning point for world football.

Although two Real Madrid players – Karim Benzema and Luka Modric – have won the Ballon d’Or over the past six years, they did so while Messi and Ronaldo still being a contender for the trophy.

But as we approach the next Ballon d’Or award ceremony, neither of these two players are top contenders. This shift marks a significant turning point, ushering in a new era in the sport.

Close fight between Bellingham and Vinicius

In fact, a recent report from AS (h/t Madrid Zone) suggests the upcoming Ballon d’Or award could witness a close fight between two Real Madrid players Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior.

It appears these two players are the only real candidates to win the prestigious trophy, as both are coming on the back of Champions League triumph.

For a while, Kylian Mbappe was regarded as the favourite to win the trophy. But the PSG’s early exit from the Champions League coupled with France’s elimination in Euro 2024 does not help his cause.

This led many to believe Vinicius could emerge as the frontrunner in the Ballon d’Or. But it appears the Brazilian is set to face strong competition from Bellingham.

The Englishman has recently led the Three Lions to the Euro 2024 final and could be in contention to win the tournament, which could significantly boost his prospects.

Vinicius, meanwhile, was not able to make any impact in Copa America as Brazil were knocked out early.

All eyes, therefore, will be on the upcoming Euro 2024 final, knowing England’s potential win could significantly impact Bellingham’s fate.
