Real Madrid will welcome Kylian Mbappe to the Santiago Bernabeu next week, as the 25-year-old forward fulfils his boyhood dream to join Los Blancos. He will have to get over the disappointment of his Euro 2024 exit with France though, which he categorised as a failure.

Mbappe had top billing going into the tournament, and while he was one of only two France players to score, assisting the other for Randal Kolo Muani and scoring a penalty, most agreed that he had flattered to deceive. Mbappe did suffer a broken nose, but he will not want to use that as an excuse.

“My Euros have been a failure,” Mbappe told Cadena SER in the mix zone.

“I wanted to be European champion and we haven’t been. That’s football. We have to move on. I wasn’t good and we’re going home, it’s that simple. It’s been a long year and I’m going on holiday to rest, which will come in handy. After that, I’m going to start a new life.”

France had chances against Spain in the second half, but forced Unai Simon into very few saves, and Mbappe had no issues admitting they were beaten by the better team.

“Spain were better than us. They scored two quick goals and in the second half we had chances to come back, but we didn’t.”

Mbappe is due to be presented to the fans at the Santiago Bernabeu next week, with the stadium set to fill up with excited Madridistas. He will likely appear next on their preseason tour to the USA, with a Clasico against Barcelona also in the offing.
