Real Madrid’s young centre-back Raul Asencio made his debut for the first-team in Los Blancos’ 1-0 defeat to AC Milan earlier this week.

Coming on in the 46th minute, he participated in the entire second half, completing 96% of his passes and recording two defensive actions for the men in white.

With Carlo Ancelotti facing a dire shortage of resources in the department ahead of the new season, Asencio is widely regarded as one of Real Madrid’s best bets to serve as the fourth-choice centre-back next season.

After all, he has been on the ascendency for a while now.

A golden opportunity

As revealed in a recent update by MARCA, Asencio was heavily in demand even earlier this summer with several clubs tabling offers for his immediate signing. The proposals he received were not only from Spain but also from other top European nations.

Real Madrid, however, have always seen him with high regard and understand the importance he can hold in the future, especially for the Castilla side.

The men in white have thus hesitated from negotiating his departure from the very beginning.

His incorporation into the first-team squad is only the latest reward for the progress he has made over the past year and the manner in which he has not allowed any offers to detract him from his goal.

No signings to be made

Speaking to the media earlier this week, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti officially confirmed that the club would not sign any more players in the ongoing summer transfer window.

“The squad is closed. Vallejo is back, Alaba is recovering. We have the youngsters: Joan [Martinez], Jacobo [Ramon] and Raúl [Asencio],” he said, specifically focusing on the central defence.

The manager’s words are only a confirmation of the high quality academy stars have been displaying in training. Given that he trusted Asencio with minutes in the opening game, it is safe to say that the 21-year-old may have a critical role this season.
