Real Madrid reveal shirt number changes for 2024/25

Real Madrid have confirmed six new shirt numbers ahead of the 2024/25 season, including the jersey Kylian Mbappe will wear for the club and a successor to Toni Kroos' number 8.

Mbappe wore number 7 throughout most of his time with former club Paris Saint-Germain and has consistently donned the number 10 for France in recent years. Neither is available at the Bernabeu as they are occupied by Vinicius Junior and Luka Modric respectively.

The new superstar arrival is expected to take over the 10 from Modric once the veteran Croatian has departed in 2025, but in the short-term he will wear number 9.

It mirrors Cristiano Ronaldo taking it in 2009/10 due to Madrid legend Raul having his preferred 7, while the last player to wear 9 was fellow Frenchman Karim Benzema until 2023.

The number 6 shirt vacated by former club captain Nacho Fernandez has been inherited by Eduardo Camavinga, who had worn 12. Federico Valverde takes over 8 following Kroos' retirement. In turn, his old number 15 shirt has gone to Arda Guler, who was 24 last season.

Aurelien Tchouameni has a new shirt for his third season with Madrid, swapping 18 for the 14 worn previously by the now departed Joselu. Centre-back Jesus Vallejo, whose very presence in the squad could be dependent on Madrid's success in their Leny Yoro pursuit, has been assigned 18.

One player yet to be given a shirt number is Endrick. The Brazilian prodigy won't officially join the club until he celebrates his 18th birthday later this month. With the above changes locked in, he could feasibly end up with 12, 16, 24 or 25 for his debut season in Spain.

In La Liga, first-team squad members are numbered from 1 to 25. Players can wear higher numbers, but only those whose are primarily registered with a club's B team.
