As reported earlier today, Real Madrid pretty have the signing of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer in the bag.

The Merengues are also working towards closing the capture of Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies in a similar deal but the situation has been complicated by the German club’s insistence on renewing the Canadian.

Recent reports even suggested that the 24-year-old had decided to renew his contract with the Bavarian giants.

However, according to MARCA, Real Madrid are now getting closer to securing the signing of Davies on a free transfer in the summer and are optimistic about the operation despite there being some doubts.

Even as Bayern Munich continue to negotiate a new deal with the left-back, Real Madrid have been quietly working behind the scenes to secure the Canadian’s signature.

Davies’ situation has been a rollercoaster since last spring. Impatience from his agent disrupted a potential move to Real Madrid during the summer transfer window of 2024.

At the time, the Spanish capital club stepped back and advised the defender to follow a strategy similar to Kylian Mbappe’s – waiting until the conditions were more favourable like they are now.

The strategic pause allowed Davies to approach the final six months of his contract, and he is now allowed to hold formal negotiations with other clubs.

In fact, Davies’ representatives recently engaged Spanish legal experts to solidify prior verbal agreements with Real Madrid, preparing for a formal contract offer. The Merengues, too, have issued the green light to proceed, bringing the deal one step closer.

While there are still some doubts, Davies is yet to reach a renewal agreement with Bayern Munich despite being offered a chance to become the club’s second-highest earner behind Harry Kane.

As such, Real Madrid remain optimistic that Davies will choose to join the Spanish giants. Valdebebas insiders are confident that their months-long effort to secure one of football’s premier full-backs will pay off.
