In a major step in the right direction, Real Madrid long-term injury absentee David Alaba resumed training with the ball today, reports The Athletic’s Guillermo Rai.

Alaba has been out of action for almost a year now having ruptured the ACL in his knee in December last year.

Following surgery, the Austrian international’s recovery has been surprisingly slow, causing concerns within the Real Madrid camp.

Even though it was initially suggested that Alaba could be back by this time, the possible date for his return has been pushed forward, with it being suggested that fans might have to wait until 2025 to see him back in action.

Alaba has been working diligently on his recovery, having recently begun training on the pitch by himself, without taking any unnecessary risks.

Today, the former Bayern Munich defender is said to have begun training with the ball again in what marks a major step in his recovery – with Real Madrid sources claiming it to be a special day for the veteran star.

Given how Real Madrid have been struggling defensively of late, Alaba’s return would be a welcome boost.

After all, both Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger have appeared far from their best levels of late while manager Carlo Ancelotti does not count on Jesus Vallejo.

However, there will be no risks taken with Alaba’s recovery and he will not be rushed back into action. It remains to be seen when the Austrian returns to play but resuming training with the ball is certainly a big step towards that.
