Luka Modric, the seasoned veteran of Real Madrid, is on the cusp of making history next season, as he is set to become the oldest player to don the famous white jersey of Los Blancos.

This achievement comes after Modric signed a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid, keeping him at the club until 2025. As he prepares for what is likely his final season in Madrid, he faces several challenges and exciting opportunities.

Following Nacho’s departure, Modric is now the first captain of Real Madrid, symbolising his significant role in the team.

On September 9, Modric will celebrate his 39th birthday, and despite his age, he believes he still has the skill and stamina to contribute effectively to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

Although he may not be the central figure he once was, the retirement of fellow midfielder Toni Kroos is expected to provide Modric with more playing time than he had last season.

Last year, his dissatisfaction with being a substitute almost led to his departure from the club. However, his decision to stay and extend his contract demonstrates his commitment and belief in his abilities.

Eyeing a unique record

Modric is now eyeing a record that has stood for decades: becoming the oldest player to ever play a match for Real Madrid.

This record is currently held by the legendary Ferenc Puskas, who played his final match for Madrid at 39 years and 38 days old in a cup tie against Betis in May 1966.

Modric already holds the distinction of being the oldest player to represent Real Madrid in both the League and the European Cup, surpassing Puskas’ previous records last season. Now, he aims to set the absolute record for longevity at the club.

To achieve this, Modric will need to stay fit and avoid injuries. If all goes well, he could break the record in a league match against Celta de Vigo on October 19 or 20 at the Balaídos stadium.
