Florentino Perez and Co. are caught in a dilemma over the situation in defence, for the matter has escalated seriously in recent weeks.

Eder Militao and Antonio Rudiger, while shaky, were doing a decent job at the back for Los Blancos but the former’s season-ending injury leaves the team in a compromising position.

The Merengues are thus scouting options on the market for January and see new signings to be a possibility. However, they also know that the market is inflated and that a new signing will not come cheap

Priority on the academy

As revealed in a recent report by MARCA, there are several voices within the Real Madrid administration, who are leaning towards trusting the academy for solutions at this delicate point in time – a philosophy that is usually associated with their arch-rivals Barcelona.

With both Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao out for the season and David Alaba not having a clear date of return, the manager is thus keeping an eye on La Fabrica for players who can provide relief.

Raul Asencio made his debut for the first team after Militao’s setback against Osasuna and dished out a mature performance with an assist to his name. As it stands, he is the front-runner to keep the starting position alongside Rudiger.

Further, the club also have other young talents in Jesus Fortea, Jacobo Ramon, Loren Aguado who can come good in the months to come and Joan Martinez who is seen as a long-term bet.

Former Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez spoke on the same topic recently and said he hoped to see more youngsters get their chances. His dream may well be coming true sooner than he anticipated.
