Real Madrid’s constant affair with free agents is no news, especially given the club’s record in recent transfer windows.

Some of Los Blancos’ recent big signings, Kylian Mbappe, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger, all arrived at the end of their contract saving the club massive transfer fees.

The Merengues, however, now appear close to tasting their own medicine given the situation of one of the team’s mainstays last season who is not enjoying the same prominence this term.

Lunin to depart?

As revealed in a recent update by AS, Andriy Lunin is the player who is best placed to give Real Madrid a taste of their own medicine.

The Ukrainian superstar, now in the final year of his contract, does not appear close to a renewal in any sense and is likely to leave as a free agent next summer.

Last season, Lunin was close to agreeing on a four-year extension with the men in white, a move that would tie him down to the Spanish capital until 2029. Events towards the end of the season, however, turned the tables around.

Despite featuring as Real Madrid’s goalkeeping mainstay for the greatest part of the 2023-24 campaign, Thibaut Courtois quickly replaced him in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans soon after his recovery.

With it clear to him that he would remain a backup option, Lunin began scouting possibilities of leaving the club in the summer. However, a move did not materialise and the player stayed back as Courtois’ deputy.

Now, the winter transfer window is Real Madrid’s final chance of securing at least some windfall from the shot-stopper’s departure but the complicated relations between his agent Jorge Mendes and the club make it highly difficult.
