Rashford and his brother speak out for the first time since mysterious omission from Amorim’s derby-day squad

In what came as a tremendous shock to Manchester United supporters before yesterday’s derby, both Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were omitted from the matchday squad entirely.

Expectedly, Ruben Amorim kept tight-lipped on the matter, which you’d perhaps want from your head coach in order to keep the peace and avoid any outlets taking his words out of context.

“We try to evaluate everything: training, performance, game performance, engagement with the team-mates, pushing the team-mates up,” Amorim told reporters pre-match. “Everything is on the line when we analyse, try to choose the players. So that is my selection. Simple.”

It is, however, intriguing timing given that it comes after a week of reports claiming United are ready to part ways with Rashford, who’s been at the club since the age of seven.

Rashford breaks silence after derby-day absence 

The forward’s stagnant form, coupled with ambiguous ‘lifestyle concerns’ (The Telegraph), has reportedly prompted United to push for the sale of their homegrown academy graduate.  Whether a deal will actually come to fruition at the end of the season remains to be seen, as you’d struggle to find many suitors jumping at the chance to match his £325,000-a-week wages.

Nonetheless, Rashford was watching on from home last night and took to social media to react to the Reds’ emphatic victory. He shared a snap of his television screen captioned: “Yesssssssss! Love it lads”.

His brother – and agent – Dwaine Maynard also chimed in with an Instagram story of his own, writing: “As you say, all you want is United to win. Regardless of anything else.”

Garnacho, on the other hand, has yet to speak out since being dropped. The attacking duo trained at Carrington the morning of the game, so it’ll be worth keeping tabs on the situation in training this week leading up to Thursday’s Carabao Cup quarter-final.
