Rashee Rice: Victim of alleged assault will not pursue charges, investigation continues

The victim of an alleged May 6 assault involving Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has asked not to file charges against Rice, according to police.

Per ESPN, when asked about the ongoing investigation, Dallas police offered this update: "The reporting party has signed an affidavit of non-prosecution. The investigation is ongoing."

The man in question was taken to the hospital on May 6 following the alleged assault, where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, including bruises and swelling on his face. Despite the injuries, the alleged victim decided not to pursue legal action.

Rice is currently facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury, according to police. The latter two charges come from a six-car crash that left seven people injured on March 30, where Rice was caught travelling at speeds of 119 mph before inciting the crash.

Rashee Rice continues to play with Chiefs:

Despite the ongoing investigation, Rashee Rice is actively participating in organized team activities with the Chiefs, per NFL.com. Ian Rapaport reports that Rice joined team OTAs on Monday, May 20.

Rice's possible suspension and Chiefs contingency:

As police said, the investigation is still ongoing. Of course, such a legal process can be very long and drawn out. Per Sporting News, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has stated that the league will wait patiently for a resolution to this case before doling any punishment. That said, there is only a slim chance that there is no resolution before the end of 2024.

Sporting News also points out that the Chiefs have been very aggressive in their pursuit of wide receivers this offseason. Vinnie Iyer writes, "The Chiefs used a first-round draft pick on a wide receiver, Xavier Worthy and also signed Marquise Brown in free agency. Kansas City needed to replace free agents Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Richie James, but given their aggressiveness to trade up for Worthy, they have a strong contingency should Rice not be available for an early-season stretch."
