Raptors' Malachi Flynn’s father unhappy with son’s playing time

Eric Flynn, father of Toronto Raptors point guard Malachi Flynn, vented his frustration in a Raptors Facebook group regarding his son’s role with the team and criticized the organization for mishandling his son’s minutes as well.

“Malachi was number 1 in the country last year in running the pick and roll,” Eric Flynn said in a post earlier today. “To not allow him to do that is like telling Patrick Mahomes he can’t pass the football.”

During his junior year at San Diego State, the younger Flynn led his team to a 30-2 overall record, while averaging 17.6 points and 5.1 assists per game and developed into one of the top floor generals in the country. He was awarded Mountain West Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year, and unanimously selected for the 2019-2020 All-American Second Team.

Prior to getting drafted by the Raptors with the 29th pick at the 2020 NBA Draft, Flynn stood at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, and a 6-foot-3 wingspan and was overlooked similar to other players of his size. Flynn more than made up for it with his high basketball IQ, great ball handling skills, shooting accuracy, and ability to defend at a high level.

As he continues to adjust and develop in the NBA, Flynn has shown flashes of his potential after being assigned to the Raptors 905, Toronto Raptors G League affiliate, averaging 20.8 points, and 5.7 assists per game, while shooting 40.9 percent from three through six games.

After rejoining the Toronto Raptors on Feb. 18, the 22-year-old rookie was placed in health and safety protocol due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the team.

Since then, Flynn along with Pascal Siakam, Patrick McCaw, and Fred VanVleet, were cleared to practice on Tuesday and could be available Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons.
