Raptors' Chris Boucher opens up about when he was homeless
Chris Boucher is currently making millions of dollars playing in the NBA for the Toronto Raptors.
That wealth stands in stark contrast to Boucher's upbringing in Montreal, where he spent a period of time without a home.
The 29-year-old opened up about his past in the debut episode of Yahoo Sports Canada's Hustle Play, sharing details about how he found himself in that situation and how he grew from the experience.
"I feel like I had all this stuff that was not good for me. School was not good for me... It got to a place where the only place I felt I was OK was by myself," Boucher said. "If you don't talk to your family, you always want to be outside, you're pushing yourself away from them. My dad, it wasn't really good with him so now you're by yourself and I got to a point where I was by myself for real — no house and nowhere to go.
"It really helped me know who I was because I had to figure out where I was just to stay above water. It's easy to lose yourself and just be like 'I'm just going to do this or rob this and fuck the consequences.' I think it also made me realize that obviously there's a light at the end of the tunnel, because I was homeless but some of my friends got killed. Some of our friends went to jail. I'm still alive right now, so yeah, being homeless was hard, but I think some people have it worse."
Boucher's biggest piece of advice for anyone going through a difficult time is to believe there are better days ahead, and to keep pushing towards them, no matter how long it takes.
"Sometimes you're deep in the tunnel and you don't see the light. And the light might be a year from now. You might have to walk a year before you start seeing a bit of light," Boucher said. "You know what happens when you don't move? Nothing. You've got to keep it moving.
"A lot of stuff bothers me, but it doesn't linger to my whole day. I've realized it's going to be there for X amount of time, then I deal with it and I'm good. I've had it worse."
