Ranking the best Halloween costumes from across the NHL

Spooky season has arrived, and with it NHLers are showing off their best digs as they get into the festive spirit.

Welcome to RANKED. Every week during the NHL season, we will be ranking players, moments, and anything else we can think of throughout hockey history. This week, it’s NHL player’s Halloween costumes from this year.

It’s spooky season, the time of year that you overestimate the number of children in costume that will be coming to your door, and find ways to justify gorging yourself on loads of sweets.

As for the NHL, Halloween means players either investing in high-quality costumes that none of us could even dream of putting together, or scrounging a last-minute gag outfit that might just go viral. This year, we've got some solid getups from around the league that should be highlighted, so let’s rank the top ten Halloween getups donned by NHLers.

10 – Tyson Barrie

After getting to meet Justin Bieber while playing in Toronto, Nashville Predators blueliner Tyson Barrie decided to honor the popstar by recreating a recent paparazzi photo. The photo in question saw Bieber and his wife Hailey wearing two extremely different outfits to an event, so Barrie and his wife went for the same look. This fit is also a sneaky elite choice for any Halloween party, going with a costume made up of a comfy hoodie and Crocs rather than some itchy store-bought ensemble.

9 – Connor Hellebuyck

Oh, so timely! The unlikely pairing of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift has created a supernova of pop culture that is seeping into just about every Halloween costume idea. Among those to jump in on the fun, Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and his partner Andrea.

This couples costume will no doubt be all over your Instagram timeline in the days to come — if it isn't already — but it appears that the only NHL player that we saw rock the Kelce-Swift linkup was the Winnipeg goalie. A mark down on lack of creativity, but it still looks fairly well executed.

8 – Alex Tuch

Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the timely characters that fit the season. Take Sabres winger Alex Tuch and his partner, for instance, who decided to go off the beaten path and let everyone know they’re already gunning for the holiday season.

Tuch, a 6-foot-4 power forward who can practically steamroll anyone on the ice if he has eyes for the opposing net, donned a tasteful dress for his Cindy Lou Who costume while he stood next to his Grinch. The season-swapped genderswap is well worthy of a spot on this list.

7 – Mika Zibanejad

The New York Rangers center might have one of the most relatable costumes of the bunch. Instead of something spooky or scary, Zibanejad and his wife Irma went as something they are currently experiencing – new parenthood.

We’re not completely sure how much of the costume they had to put together and what was already there to begin with — the bags under the eyes might have just needed some slight highlighting — but this is certainly something we're sure new parents across the hockey world relate quite strongly to.

6 – Quinton Byfield and Jordan Spence

Couples costumes are one thing, but this type of coordinated regalia is a different level. Kings teammates Quinton Byfield and Jordan Spence reached into their childhood memories and pulled out a couple of characters from The Incredibles, with Byfield as Frozone and Spence as Dash in a hilarious combo.

As for those of you who aren't feeling ancient enough watching NHLers dress as Pixar characters, here's some food for thought: Byfield had turned two years old just a handful of months before the release of The Incredibles back in 2004.

5 – Brady Tkachuk

Brady Tkachuk is committed to the bit. For several years now, the Senators captain has worked through the catalog of Will Ferrell and decided to portray one of his many characters each Halloween season. With costumes featuring Ferrell's work from Elf, Semi-Pro, Stepbrothers, and Talladega Nights, Tkachuk has moved onto some of Ferrell’s less notable characters, with this look as a youth soccer coach from Kicking and Screaming.

While it might not have taken as much effort as the others, Tkachuk deserves his spot on this list for impeccable consistency.

4 – J.T. Miller

We don’t even know what more can be said about Canucks’ J.T. Miller’s costume this year. There is simply no description we could write that gives justice to his hilarious costume as a Playboy bunny.

3 – Ryan Reaves

While most couples decided to go as various fictional characters, Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves and his wife went above and beyond for their fits. The two decided to honor a newer dynamic duo: Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart.

It may have taken us a few minutes to truly understand what the costume is supposed to be, but when it hits, it hits.

2 – Jesse Puljujarvi

If you said that you did not burst out laughing or were utterly shocked by how outlandish and funny this costume is, you'd surely be lying. While currently unsigned, Puljujarvi deserves to be on this list for his almost perfect costume of rapper Ice Spice.

The hair, the makeup, the outfit, the stockings, the make-shift boots – everything is spot on and perfect. The Finnish forward could have easily earned the top spot, but there was one effort that was just slightly above the winger’s getup.

1 – The Boston Bruins

When a full team commits to a singular costume idea and then visits a local children’s hospital during this busy time of the year, there's no competition. A whole bunch of Boston Bruins went to visit Boston Children’s Hospital as different iterations of Ken (with Jeremy Swayman as Barbie) from the summer blockbuster of the same name and put a whole lot of smiles on kids' faces.

From strapping on a little plastic car to pulling off just about every outfit Ryan Gosling wore in that movie, the Bruins nailed it and justifiably earn top spot in our rankings.
