Ranking every fanbase in the MLB postseason

When we set out to rank every fanbase in the MLB postseason, we knew a couple things for sure: Some feelings were going to be hurt and some people were going to get angry.

But here we are anyway, because sports are nothing without rankings. And as baseball gets ready to kick off its postseason, we wondered which team has the best fans. You know, especially since the St. Louis Cardinals aren’t around. *ahem*

First off, this is totally subjective. TOTALLY. We are five different people, living in five different parts of the country (one in a different country!), each with our own interactions with various fanbases.

We see the good and the bad. We go to games, interact with people online, read our e-mails and, sure, we have our biases. The person in California will have a different view of San Francisco Giants fans and Los Angeles Dodgers fans than the person to the East Coast. That’s just how it goes.

Not that we’ve gotten all the disclaimers out of the way, here are the 10 fanbases in the MLB postseason, ranked, along with some comments (both serious and otherwise) from our electorate.

1. Chicago Cubs
There’s also no denying the Cubs are loyal. Still going strong despite the 108-year World Series drought? Can’t hate that.

“I can relate to fans who are used to their team being bad and are thirsty for postseason glory” — Liz Roscher

“How would Wrigley react to the Cubs winning the World Series? We may be about to find out” – Israel Fehr

“One look into Kris Bryant’s big blue eyes, and you’ll be a Cubs fan too” — Chris Cwik

“I’m related to most of them and I know they’ll be reading this. Cubs No. 1!” — Mark Townsend

“Their loyalty card has been punched so many times by now, they deserve something free” — Mike Oz

“These guys know how to do the playoffs right” — Roscher

“Watch a couple games at Fenway Park and you’ll respect the hell out of Red Sox fans” — Oz

3. San Francisco Giants
This is for certain: They’ve got a lot to brag about so far this decade.

“We know how the Bay gets down for the Giants in the postseason. And if you need a reminder, just ask E-40” — Fehr

“Apparently they respond well to torture. That’s a little strange, but entirely respectable” – Townsend

“As someone who is among a lot of them, I’ll say this: the bandwagon has been pretty full the past few years” — Oz

4. New York Mets
It’s not always easy cheering for the other team in New York, but Mets fans wear it proudly.

“No fanbase knows how to lose better than the Mets” — Roscher

“A passionate fanbase, but you would have thought the Mets were eliminated in August had you followed fans on Twitter” — Cwik

“They definitely have the best celebrity fans. Hello, Jerry Seinfeld and Billy Joel” — Townsend

5. Cleveland Indians
In terms of success, Cleveland sports fans as a whole have the worst — even considering the recent NBA Finals result — but they’re loyal nonetheless.

“Remember the celebration after the Cavaliers won? Imagine that, only with baseball” — Roscher

“If the Indians win the World Series, we can officially hate on Cleveland as a sports town again. Until then, you have to root for Cleveland’s happiness” — Cwik

“Any fanbase that is so quick to embrace Mike Napoli is OK in my book” — Oz

6. Los Angeles Dodgers
The bright lights of Hollywood offer so many entertainment options, the Dodgers are far from the only show in town. But when they’re good, Dodgers fans will let you know.

“Now that the Lakers stink, the Dodgers are the team in Los Angeles” — Fehr

“Are there people out there who actually root against Clayton Kershaw?” — Cwik

“Would be higher, but they left halfway through this post” — Townsend

7. Toronto Blue Jays
Jays fans are known for being a loud and — sometimes — raucous bunch. There’s also A LOT of them, considering they’ve got a whole country behind them.

“From Victoria to Halifax, fans will be supporting Canada’s team. And the ones in Toronto are sure to be loud and proud” — Fehr, our resident Canadian.

“I was worried about ranking them too low, but I know Canadians are too polite to kill me for it” — Cwik

“A good opportunity to atone for last year’s garbage-throwing incident” — Townsend

8. Texas Rangers
They definitely like football more down there in Arlington, but Rangers fans are hungry for their first World Series.

“Their team has put them through the ringer after two straight WS losses, and yet here they are, as optimistic as ever” — Roscher

“If you got to see Adrian Beltre every day, you would fall in love with this team too” — Cwik

“I’ll probably get punched in the face for this, but they seem among the mean-spirited this year” — Oz

9. Baltimore Orioles
They know good times and they know bad. And, somewhat lost in all the talk of titles this year: The Orioles haven’t won one since 1983.

“A beautiful ballpark that was often not close to full down the stretch, the Orioles can make sure it’s packed with a win in the wild-card game” — Fehr

“Baltimore is a great baseball town and a great sports town in general. It’s just overmatched in this loaded field” — Townsend

“I don’t think I’ve ever encountered a single Orioles fan in real life” — Oz

10. Washington Nationals
The youngest of the bunch. Keep in mind the Nats only moved to D.C. in 2005. A lot of fans probably didn’t follow from Montreal.

“I’ve never seen a Nats fan in the wild. Maybe if they win that will change. Show yourselves, Nats fans!” — Roscher

“Most of them are still Orioles fans, depending on the day of week” — Townsend

“Nothing against Nats fans, but the team is still young and most devout fans are transplants to the area” — Cwik

“I’ll say this for the Nats fans, the ones I’ve encountered online are great. Super engaged and interested” — Oz
