Manchester United continue their pre-season preparations with a high-profile friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield on Saturday at 4pm.

There’s serious work to do for Erik ten Hag who, despite earning a new contract with a shock FA Cup final win over Manchester City — his second trophy in two years at Old Trafford — will be under pressure to improve vastly on last season’s eighth-placed Premier League finish.

Man Utd’s latest test sees them take on Scottish giants Rangers, who themselves are looking to bounce back after finishing as runner-up to arch-rivals Celtic in both the Premiership and Scottish Cup — their only solace coming by winning the Scottish League Cup.

Both sides searching for improvement after defeats

Neither Rangers nor Man Utd will have been too pleased with how their preparations for the upcoming 2024/25 season have begun after both suffered defeats in their opening friendlies.

The Red Devils were poor for large swathes of their meeting with Norwegian side Rosenborg on Monday and an injury-time winner from Noah Holm secured a 1-0 victory for the hosts in Trondheim, with Man Utd registering just two shots all game.

Rangers had a slightly more enjoyable experience in their meeting with Ajax thanks to Tom Lawrence’s first-half strike. However, goals from Kian Fitz-Jim and Branco van den Boomen secured the victory for the Dutch giants, while an injury to midfielder Nicolas Raskin will also have put a dampener on proceedings for the Scots.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag will be aware of the need for improvement after a thoroughly disappointing 2023/24 campaign ended with an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League – with an FA Cup triumph salvaging European football for the Red Devils.

The Gers meanwhile will be out for revenge after losing out on the title to Celtic and they will be hoping that new signings Jefte and Mohamed Diomande will fill the void left by John Lundstram and Borna Barisic – who have both joined Trabzonspor in Turkey.

Rangers vs Man Utd latest team news

Philippe Clement named a strong side for Rangers’ loss to Ajax, with the likes of goalkeeper Jack Butland, centre-back Connor Goldson and midfielder Kieran Dowell all starting from the off.

Tom Lawrence grabbed the only goal for Rangers last time out and will be hoping to keep his place in the first XI, while Scott Wright and Leon Balogun could make a return to the starting line-up after appearing from the bench.

Erik ten Hag named five first-team members in the starting line-up for Man Utd’s defeat to Rosenborg last time out – Aaron Wan Bissaka, Jonny Evans, Casemiro, Mason Mount and Marcus Rashford – and the quintet are likely to keep their places to improve their fitness for the upcoming season.

Youngsters Dermot Mee, Elyh Harrison, Sam Mather and Louis Jackson were the only four members of the matchday squad not to receive minutes on Monday and could enter the fray at the weekend, while new signing Joshua Zirkzee could also be available to feature.

It could be a while before Manchester United’s latest acquisition, Lenny Yoro, makes his unofficial debut in pre-season. The Red Devils captured the highly promising teenage centre-back from Lille for an initial feel of £52m, after heavy interest from European champions Real Madrid, and club sporting director Dan Ashworth believes it’s a signing in line with United’s in-house philosophy.

“Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class centre-back,” he said. “Having had such an excellent start to his career we are excited to support him in reaching his immense potential here at Manchester United.

“This club has a fantastic record of developing young players, whether homegrown or brought in from elsewhere, and giving them the required guidance, time and patience to grow and flourish. Under Erik ten Hag and our excellent staff we will ensure that Leny has the perfect platform to achieve the success that everyone across the club is aiming for.”
