Rangers Reportedly Looking To Unload Contracts With Hopes Of Acquiring A Star Player

Rangers general manager Chris Drury has a plan for the future of the franchise.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN talked about Dury’s potential strategy to unload his expiring contracts as well as the Blueshirts’ pursuit to acquire a big fish.

“Peter Laviolette and Chris Drury still have support from ownership and they are going to work to continue to re-shape this roster,” Kaplan said. “That means unloading more contracts, but also using more of that cap space to bring players in, either in hockey trades or free agency this summer.

“A common theme for any players brought to the Rangers is going to be physicality. Meat and potatoes ia a term I’ve heard the Rangers’ front office has used a lot lately.”

The Rangers' unrestricted free agents this summer include Reily Smith, Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey, Will Borgen and Jonathan Quick.

The Rangers currently sit close to the bottom of the Metropolitan Division with a 17-19-1 record as their playoff hopes continue to dwindle.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli also reported the Rangers will likely be sellers at the trade deadline but long-term buyers.

“Right now, they’re trending to be sellers,” Seravalli said. “But, I still don’t believe that Chris Drury is going to sit back and do nothing.

“I think they’re going to be buyers for the long haul, but maybe not fixing this season, if that makes any sense.”

The ball is in Drury’s court and all eyes will be on him.
