Randal Grichuk steals game-tying home run from George Springer

Seunghwan Oh picked up the save for the Blue Jays in their 6-3 win over the Astros on Monday, but it might as well have gone to Randal Grichuk.

In the bottom of the ninth with two men on and none out, George Springer launched a flyball to right field that looked destined to erase the Blue Jays’ three-run lead. Grichuk had other ideas, though.

The Blue Jays right fielder calmly backed up on the ball, found the wall with his hand, and leapt into the air to commit an act of grand larceny.

Grichuk had already made his mark on the game with a mammoth 471-foot drive in the previous inning, but his highlight reel snare sealed the deal for the Blue Jays as Oh was able to strike out Jose Altuve to end the game.

Although credit for the catch clearly belongs to the man who made it, manager John Gibbons deserves a touch for his ninth inning defensive move. Grichuk actually began the game in centre field with Curtis Granderson in right, seemingly to give Kevin Pillar a day off.

However, with the game close in the final inning, Pillar came in to play centre, moving Grichuk into right and putting him into position to play the remarkable play – one the 37-year-old Granderson almost certainly wouldn’t have. If he’d opted to let Pillar sit the whole game out, it could’ve headed to extra innings.

When he’s at his best, Grichuk can alter a baseball game at the plate and in the field. He certainly showed the Blue Jays a pretty memorable example of that on Monday.
