The Queen won’t attend Royal Ascot for the first time ever in her 68-year reign.
However, the race will still go ahead privately and will adhere to the government’s current guidelines during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Although racing can now take place, there will be no crowds, no trophy presentations and no royal carriage procession.
The event usually takes place over five days in Berkshire, with around 300,000 guests dressing up for the popular race.
Spectators won’t completely miss out on this year’s Ascot though, as they can watch the coverage on television. The Queen will be watching the coverage virtually at Windsor Castle, where she’s isolating with the Duke of Edinburgh.
The Queen has a number of runners taking part in the event, including horses First Receiver, Tactical and Punctuation. As an owner, she will have access to the new online Racing Hub – a 360-degree virtual parade ring camera feed.
The monarch is known to be a huge fan of Ascot as she traditionally attends each year and has won around £7 million in prize money from horse racing over three decades.
